About a quarter of U.S. teens have used ChatGPT for schoolwork

Use of ChatGPT for schoolwork doubled in one year. The share of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who say they have used ChatGPT to help with school assignments rose from 13% in 2023 to 26% in 2024. Most teens (73%) still have not used it in this way. (Pew Research Center)

Patterns vary by age and race. Older teens in 11th and 12th grades are more likely to use it (31%) than younger teens in 7th and 8th grades (20%). Black and Hispanic teens report higher use (31% each) compared with White teens (22%). (Pew Research Center)

Awareness of ChatGPT increased. Overall awareness climbed from 67% in 2023 to 79% in 2024, and the share who say they have heard “a lot” about it rose from 23% to 32%. Teens with higher awareness are more likely to use it for schoolwork. (Pew Research Center)

Attitudes about acceptable use vary by task.

  • About 54% say it is acceptable to use ChatGPT to research new topics.
  • 29% say it is acceptable for solving math problems.
  • Only 18% say it is acceptable to use it to write essays, and 42% say that is not acceptable. (Pew Research Center)

Familiarity links to acceptance and usage. Teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are far more likely to both use it and say its use is acceptable for certain academic tasks. (Pew Research Center)

These points show growing engagement with generative AI among teens in educational contexts, and nuanced attitudes toward what kinds of uses are appropriate.
