Until 2015 the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities bore the name of Philosophical Sciences. It is one of the first departments founded at the University of Economics - Varna.
In 1945/46, when the Higher School of Economic and Social Sciences is transformed into Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the Varna State University after the name of St. Cyril Slav Bulgarian, the training in Science Philosophy is introduced as a major. The Department is founded later in 1948/49 and as of 1990 it bears the name of Philosophical Sciences.
During all these years the main objectives and priorities of the Department are intended to attain an effective academic process, continuous improvement of the quality of education, development of scientific research and career growth of the academic staff of the Department.
The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities conducts the basic training of the students from the University of Economics - Varna through studying the subjects: Philosophy, Economic Sociology, Economic Psychology, History of Economics, Political Sciences, European Studies and Globalization.
The course contents reflect the contemporary processes occurring in the global economy and societal change. It gives the students knowledge and skills for orientation in the modern scientific and social trends, for analysing and creative thinking, for searching heuristics and practical solutions integrating them into the diversity of the European educational space and thus granting them chances for better future professional career.
The academic staff of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities is notable for its very good qualification, competence, knowledge and experience. The academic staff consists of highly qualified specialists which is evidenced by their participation in numerous scientific and research projects, national and international scientific organizations, as well as by the conducted expert and consulting activities for the business.
Through the knowledge of philosophy and social sciences the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities conducts basic training of students and contributes to the development of their creative activity and erudition, as well as for their understanding of the processes of today's global world.
